The highlight of the dancing year in Central Java are the phenomenal
Ramayana ballets held during the summer months at the
Prambanan Open-Air Theatre , to the west of the complex. The
Ramayana story is performed just twice monthly from May to October, spread over the two weekends closest to the full moon. The story is split into four episodes, each evening from Friday to Monday (7-9pm). The second night is the best, with most of the characters making an appearance, and the action is intense. Tickets cost Rp5000-30,000; plenty of agents in Yogya organize transport. Yogya's tourist office also organizes taxis to and from the theatre.
Throughout the year, Prambanan's Trimurti Theatre , an indoor venue to the north of the open-air arena, performs the Ramayana ballet (Tues-Thurs 7.30-9.30pm; Rp10,000-15,000). Tickets are available on the door or from agencies.
