Most people visit the Prambanan temples on a day-trip from Yogya. Although many tour companies in Yogya offer all-inclusive packages to Prambanan, it is easy enough to get there by local bus from Yogya or Solo. Public buses drop passengers off in Prambanan village , a tiny huddle on the southern side of Jalan Adisucipto, a five-minute walk from the eastern entrance to the temple complex. The only disadvantage to coming by bus is that you can't then get to the other ruins on the plain, which is why many visitors choose to cycle here from Yogya. Fume-choked Jalan Adisucipto is the most straightforward route, but there's a quieter alternative that begins by heading north along Yogya's Jalan Simanjutak and Jalan Kaliurang until you reach the Mataram Canal, just past the main Gajah Mada University compound. Follow the canal path east for 12km (1hr), and you'll come out eventually near Candi Sari on Jalan Adisucipto. Prambanan village is 4km east of Candi Sari, along Jalan Adisucipto. You can stay in the village at the rudimentary Losmen NY Muharti, Jl Tampurnas Ngangkruk 2-3 (tel 0274/496103; $5-10).
