Practicalities

Batu Layang bus terminal is inconveniently located 6km north of the centre. Regular white bemos (Rp350) leave from Batu Layang to the Siantan bemo terminal, from where you can catch a ferry (Rp150) to the western side. Nearly every tourist who arrives in Pontianak is looking to catch a bus straight up to Kuching in Sarawak - now the easiest way of renewing Indonesian visas. A number of bus companies run the route, and most departures are either early in the morning or late at night; you should be able to pick up your bus from the agent in town. The reliable PT SJS (Setia Jiwana Sakti), Jl Sisingamangaraja 155 (tel 0561/34626), runs four buses a day to Kuching, Sibu and Miri. Buses to the interior - to Sintang and Putussibau - also leave frequently from these agents.

Supadio airport lies 20km south of the city centre. Bemos (every 30min; Rp500) run to the Kapuas Indah terminal in the town centre, or you can catch a cab (Rp15,000). The ferry port is a few hundred metres north of the Kapuas Indah bemo station in the centre. During the rainy season, weekly passenger ferries travel to and from Putussibau via Sintang. The ferries are extremely basic, though a bed and food are provided for Rp1500. Mitra Kalindo Samudera, Jl Diponegoro 39 (tel 0561/49751), sells tickets for the daily 8am Ketapang Express to Ketapang, and the Kapuas Expres runs twice weekly to Jakarta. At the Pelni ferry office, Jl Sultan Abdur Rahman 12 (Mon-Sat 9.30am-noon), you can buy tickets for services to, amongst other places, Jakarta and Kijang on Pulau Batam. The KM Tilongkabila, KM Bukit Raya, KM Lawit and KM Leuser all call in here .
