Shopping

Although it doesn't have anywhere near the retail opportunities of the Bali resorts or of Senggigi, just up the coast, shopping in the city can be fun. The Mandalika market has an extensive range of crafts scattered amongst the vegetables, fish, meat and plastic household goods. Ampenan has a clutch of art and "antique" shops selling crafts from Lombok and the islands further east. They are concentrated in Jalan Saleh Sungkar, starting with Yufi, about 200m south from the turning to the bemo terminal, and in the Jalan Yos Sudarso area, north of the bridge across the Jangkok River. A couple of factories also produce ikat cloth; Rinjani Handwoven, Jl Pejanggik 44-46, Cakra (daily 9am-9pm), and Slamet Riady, Jl Tanun 10, just off Jl Hasanudin, Cakra, are both worth a look. For Lombok pottery visit Lombok Pottery Centre, Jl Sriwijaya 111A, Ampenan (tel 0370/640351), which stocks the best quality products of the three main pottery centres on the island, and Sasak Pottery, Jl Koperasi 102 (tel 0370/631687) which operates shops in several hotels on the island and is the biggest earthenware showroom in Indonesia, with more than 400 designs on display. An excellent one-stop shopping spot is the Lombok Handicraft Centre at Rungkang Jangkok, Sayang Sayang. Just beyond the Jangkok River, about 2km north of Cakranegara on Jalan St Hasanudin, it has numerous small shops selling every type of craftwork imaginable.
