Bookshops English-language novels, maps and guidebooks at Promedia, on the top floor of the Matahari Department Store on Jl Sungai Saddang.

Diving Makassar Diving, in the POPSA compound across from the fort at Jl Makassar 3 (tel 0411/326056), takes qualified divers on day dives (US$50) and weekend trips to Speermonde.

Hospitals Stella Maris, Jl Penghibur (tel 0411/854341). Your best chance in southern Sulawesi for correct diagnosis and treatment by English-speaking staff.

Immigration Jl Seram Ujung 8-12 (tel 0411/831531). Not the easiest place in Indonesia to get a visa extended.

Internet access There are dozens of outlets in Makassar. The post office on Jl Slamet Riyadi charges Rp2500 for 15min; the International Net Center, Jl Irian 31/67, charges the same, and the connection is a little faster too.
