Moving On From Makassar

Hasanuddin airport is the busiest in eastern Indonesia, with flights to Irian, Nusa Tenggara, Java, Kalimantan and abroad. To get to the airport from 6am to 6pm, catch the thrice-hourly Maros bus from Jalan Cokroaminoto on the west side of Pasar Sentral and tell the driver you want to be dropped at the airport (Rp1500).

Buses for Sengkang, Parepare, Tanah Toraja and many other destinations right up to Manado leave from Terminal Panaikang; catch a pete-pete from Pasar Sentral. For the south coast use Terminal Mallengkeri, Terminal Tamalate, or Sunguminasa's bus station, all of which can be reached by red pete-pete from the northeast corner of Medan Karebosi on Jalan Sudirman (Rp400).

From the Pelni harbour ferries run to ports all over Sulawesi, plus Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Irian. The boats that call here include KM Awu, KM Bukit Siguntang, KM Ciremai, KM Kambuna, KM Lambelu, KM Rinjani, KM Tatamailau, KM Tidar, KM Tilongkabila and KM Umsini . The Pelni office is at Jl Sudirman 38 (tel 0411/331401); tickets (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm) on ground level; top floor for timetables. Other boats use Paotere Harbour.
