Eating

A small night market sets up near the Jalan A Yani/Teuku Umar junction.

Canyon Coffee Shop , Jl Teuku Umar 18b. An inexpensive and popular travellers' place with a friendly atmosphere. The menu includes seventeen varieties of toast and eight coffees.

Clock Tower Coffee Shop , Jl Teuku Umar 7d. Pleasant furnishings and a good menu of Western and Indonesian favourites including steak, spaghetti and tacos.

Harau Cliff Cafe , Jl A Yani. Extremely good value place (steak is Rp7000 and sate, gado-gado and cap cay under Rp2000) with a relaxed atmosphere.

Sari , Jl Yos Sudarso 31. Large place with an expensive menu (fried rice and noodles are over Rp6000, vegetable dishes Rp10000-12000), and an outside area giving good views of the canyon.

Selamat , Jl A Yani 19. One of the best Padang restaurants in town, they usually have eggs in coconut sauce, which is especially good for vegetarians.

Simpang Raya , Jl Muka Jam Gadang. This large, popular restaurant has good-quality Padang food plus a basic Indonesian menu with soup, rice or noodle dishes.

Under the Bridge Restaurant , Jl A Yani. A slightly upmarket travellers' restaurant serving steaks, pasta, pizza, apple pie and chocolate cake.
