Pulau Weh
A mountainous outcrop of dark green rising sharply from the azure waters of the Indian Ocean north of Banda Aceh, Pulau Weh is yet another gorgeous Indonesian paradise, with excellent diving and snorkelling possibilities and white sandy beaches. Weh's airport has been closed since 1985, though currently the runway is being extended and it is hoped that flights to the island should begin soon. Until they do, the twice-daily ferry crossing from Kreung Raya harbour, 35km west of Banda Aceh, is the only connection from the mainland (2hr 30min; Rp4250). Labi-labi from Banda Aceh to Kreung Raya leave regularly during the morning from outside the Pasar Ikan (fish market), and also from Jalan Diponegoro (Rp1500). The ferries dock on Weh at Balohan , on the southeastern corner of the island, from where it's a fifteen-minute bemo ride to Sabang (Rp1500).
