Jayapura
Huddled in a narrow valley between jungle-covered hills, JAYAPURA is Irian Jaya's tiny capital city and major port town. Most people acquire their surat jalan at the police station, and all Pelni ferries leave from the harbour. The two main streets of Jalan Achmad Yani and Jalan Percetakan run parallel to each other and at right angles to the seafront. Pretty much every place you will need is within walking distance of here, one exception being the tourist office (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; tel 0967/35923), 3km northwest of the waterfront on Jalan Soa Siu: take a taksi heading northwest from town and ask for Kantor Dinas Parawisata. The University of Cenderawasih Museum (Tues-Sat 8am-4pm) between Jayapura and Abepura, has an excellent collection of artefacts from around Irian, with a good deal of bisj poles and other carvings from the Asmat region.
